In his newest DVD, “Natural Dye Workshop IV: Beyond Mordants: Indigo Intensive and Direct Application of Dyes,” phytochemist and master dyer Michel Garcia covers ancient traditions from around the world that unlock the potential of natural colors without mineral mordants in his new studio in Brittany, France.

The fourth film in the Natural Dye Workshop series is inspired by Brittany, a region inhabited by humans since the Lower Paleolithic period. In his new studio near the north Atlantic Ocean, Michel Garcia continues his research and experimentation to unlock the mysteries of natural colors. Using sustainable methods he explores offerings from the ocean and the peninsula regions, as well as from local communities with whom he engages in his travels through the world.

Showing different types and forms of indigo plants Michel demonstrates simple extraction methods, how to dye and paint with it, and even how to distinguish fake from authentic natural indigo in the marketplace. He shares historical anecdotes and explains botany and phytochemistry to help dyers gain insight into the ancient practice and wisdom behind their craft.
